Ready to take action? Here are some ways you can engage and show your solidarity in the days leading up to Labor Day.
- Wear Red. Wear your #RedForEd or local union t-shirt starting on Wednesday, 8/27.
- Organize a Walk In, Stand Out, or Bridge Takeover. Gather with parents, educators, and students before or after school in a high-visibility location (weather permitting).
- Send a Letter. Write to your local newspaper or your local elected officials (school board members and elected officials are great choices!) about what students and schools need. Need help drafting a letter to the editor? Click here for helpful tips.
- Share Your Story. Post on social media about the reality of teaching in Arizona. Help your friends and neighbors understand the sacrifices that we make as educators and the changes that we need.
- Share the Numbers. Post on social media about how low salaries, inflation, and high tariffs are affecting your family’s ability to make ends meet.
- Connect with a Colleague.Take a moment to familiarize yourself with Jane McAlevey’s Six Steps for Organizing Conversations. Then, schedule a time to talk with one of your non-union colleagues about the value of union membership.
- Post about Labor Day. Use social media to share your union pride. Download one of AEA’s new temporary profile pictures and add it to your profile to show your solidarity with your union siblings.
- Host an Action. If your local chooses to organize an event for Labor Day, be sure to connect with your local organizational consultant to make sure it is hosted on Mobilize. Hosting your event on Mobilize makes it possible for other community members to find your event. Need inspiration for an action? Check out NEA's Labor Day Tookit.
- Join a Labor Day event near you. Not ready to host an action? Check out the May Day movement’s map to find an event in your community.
- Subscribe to AEA’s Lead & Learn Podcast. Keep an eye out for our new podcast episode on Labor History (coming later this week!).
For Your Awareness:
- On Friday, August 29, AEA leaders will hold a press conference with other statewide labor unions about the importance of worker-centered policies that put families and communities first. Stay tuned for more information.
