REDforED Week April 26 – 30, 2021

APRIL 26, 2021 – Today, AEA members across the state will be celebrating the third anniversary of the historic day 75,000 educators, parents, and education advocates marched on the Arizona Capitol to demand the state meet its responsibility to fund the public schools our students deserve.

When educators stood together and demanded funding for our students and schools, it started the #REDforED movement. Three years later, that movement has continued to grow.

To celebrate the 75,000 educators who marched on the state Capitol on April 26, 2018, the Arizona Education Association is declaring the week of April 26 as #REDforED Week.

The Mayors of Phoenix and Tucson, Kate Gallego and Regina Romero, have issued proclamations declaring April 26 as #REDforED day. “As Mayor of the City of Tucson, I am proud to stand with all educators throughout Arizona in declaring today, April 26th #REDforED Day,” says Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “Three years ago today, our teachers and education support professionals marched to our State Capitol to demand the compensation and support that they and our students deserve. Despite passing a statewide ballot initiative in 2020, funding for our public schools continues to be under attack. The best investment we can make is in our children - and that begins with fully funded public schools.”

“Since we marched on the Capitol, we took the matter of school funding into our own hands and created permanent, sustainable education funding through a citizens’ initiative,” says Thomas. “The Invest in Education Act is a direct result of #REDforED and demonstrates the power of educators’ collective action at work. Our work is not done. Arizona educators are committed to their students and will always advocate for the schools they deserve.”
