Arizona Supreme Court Ruling Is a Disgrace

On April 21, 2022, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled against Prop 307 and protecting funding for public schools and instead sided with wealthy corporate interests. Despite the clear and strong language of the Arizona Constitution granting the people a co-equal right to legislate, Governor Ducey, Legislative Leadership, and the Ducey-packed Supreme Court have stripped the people of their rights. They are doing it openly, contrary to longstanding precedent, and to help the rich, not everyday Arizonans.

The following statement can be attributed to AEA President Joe Thomas:

“Last summer hundreds of teachers, parents, school employees, and community members worked to collect signatures to give voters the chance to reject a massive tax cut for the rich because they know we cannot afford another tax cut when our schools are already struggling with funding levels. Today’s ruling is as disgraceful as Arizona’s ranking near the bottom in per-pupil spending. It erases Arizona voters and it sends a message to educators and students that the state prioritizes wealthy special interests over public education funding.”
