AEA Statement on Governor Hobbs' Veto of SB1001

As educators, it’s our responsibility to give our students the support they need to learn, grow and become their best selves. One part of that is using our students’ chosen names and preferred pronouns.

PHOENIX –  In response to Governor Hobbs’ veto of SB1001, AEA President Marisol Garcia released the following statement:

“As educators, it’s our responsibility to give our students the support they need to learn, grow and become their best selves. One part of that is using our students’ chosen names and preferred pronouns. But SB1001 would have prevented public school educators from using our students’ chosen names and preferred pronouns without parental permission, regardless of the situation. SB1001 was a direct attack on LGBTQ students, and it would have blocked public school educators from just doing our jobs. We’re grateful to Governor Katie Hobbs for vetoing this atrocious legislation.”
