The Arizona Education Association mourns the loss of one of its own, Debbie Rusiski, who died on December 16, 2009. Debbie was an Organizational Consultant in the AEA Northern Office and committed herself wholeheartedly to the promise of quality public education for every child in Arizona.
Debbie began her career in education as a bus driver for Mesa Public Schools. During her time in Mesa, she served as the Mesa Education Support Professional Association local president and was on the AEA Regional Board of Directors. While on the AEA Board, she served on the AEA Human and Civil Rights Committee.
Debbie had committed herself professionally and privately to issues concerning human and civil rights. This past April, she was awarded the AEA Human & Civil Rights Award at the Salute to Excellence celebration.
Debbie had worked with the AEA ESP Caucus; the AEA Women's Concern Caucus; the AEA Gay, Lesbian, Straight Alliance Caucus; and the Minority Affairs Caucus/Committee. She brought their respective issues before the AEA Board and Delegate Assembly. Then as an AEA staff member, she continued her pursuit by offering sound, well thought-out advice, and direction to members of these committees.
Most recently Debbie was working with several Navajo Nation communities and developed a deep understanding of the workings of the Navajo people and their culture and had brought that knowledge into AEA trainings.
According to those closest to Debbie, she toed the line for those in need of an advocate. She approached every situation, personal or professional, with the same unwavering commitment to her principles and values.
The AEA is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, leader, and friend and expresses our sympathy to Debbie's family. Expressions of condolences may be sent to Debbie's mother at Eleanor M. Larson, 6254 E. Boise St., Mesa, AZ, 85205-8339.
