Open Public Hearing on NCLB
You’re invited to an open public hearing on No Child Left Behind with U.S. Representative Raúl Grijalva on Thursday, May 31, from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., at Lattie Coor Elementary School.  As the U.S. Congress considers reauthorization of the federal education law known as No Child Left Behind, you are invited to testify before Congressman Grijalva and a panel of community members advocating for changes in the legislation. Congressman Grijalva sits on the Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee which will oversee the reauthorization of the NCLB Act in 2007.  View the event flyer.

Join the Call for Action on NCLB!
Find out where your new Member of Congress stands on the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law.  Join hundreds of other educators and parents on a “Virtual Town Hall” phone conversation on NCLB with newly elected Representative Harry Mitchell on May 24 at 5:30 p.m.  It’s a new, quick, simple way to get involved!

AEA, in partnership with Arizona Parent Teacher Association, Arizona Parents for Public Education and Voices for Education will connect thousands of members and other education advocates with special guest Rep. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Virtual Town Hall
Hundreds of members and community members concerned with the reauthorization of NCLB participated in AEA’s first Virtual Town Hall telephone forum on May 9.  While Representative Giffords was unable to call in due to the military funding vote, several participants were able to voice their views on NCLB and get questions answered by Representative Giffords legislative staff.  You may listen to an audio of the Virtual Town Hall online.

Congressman Grijalva Hears from Members About NCLB
AEA Board of Directors member Bill Rhodes organized an NCLB Educators Roundtable where Congressman Raul Grijalva met with AEA members in Yuma on April to hear what they had to say about the No Child Left Behind Act.  Gijalva told the press that he believes there are other issues besides funding that need to be fixed when NCLB gets reauthorized this year.  View the TV interview.  Local Association members had the chance to address how NCLB has affected them in the classroom and the kinds of positive changes they would like to see.  The event held great significance since the Congressman sits on the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee, which will oversee NCLB reauthorization.

Members in Tucson also had the opportunity to speak with Congressman Grijalva at an NCLB Community Hearing hosted by Voices for Education.  Nearly 300 people attended the hearing on April 14 at Roskruge Elementary/Middle School.  AEA Vice-President Andrew Morrill presented NEA’s proposals to Congress to fundamentally change NCLBView slideshow of photos.

NCLB the Focus of Education Summits Held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
In March Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords held Education Summits in Tucson and Sierra Vista, where she heard testimony from dozens of community members, as well as Association members, about the impact of NCLB.  Giffords was joined at the summit by a panel of experts, including parents, educators, and school board members.  While the summits were only scheduled for 90 minutes, Giffords committed to staying for several hours to make sure she heard testimony from everyone who wished to speak.  “I want to hear from the people most affected by the Act before voting on its reauthorization,” said Giffords.
